Bergamot

Botanical Name:  Citrus Bergamia

Country of Origin: Calabria, Italy

History: it takes the name from Bergamo in northern Italy where it was first popularized and sold in the 16th century.

Description: A refreshing and cooling essential oil with a sweet fruity odor. It soothes nervous tension, and can help with depression and anxiety. It has a soothing effect on the psyche while being refreshing at the same time. An effective aid for healthy digestion

USES
Skin: inflammations, acne, cold sores, eczema, psoriasis, wounds.
Oral hygiene: halitosis, mouth infections
Respiratory: cold, flu
Immune/lymph: cold sores, chicken pox, shingles, sore throats, infectious diseases
Genito-urinary: cystitis, leaucorrhoea, gonococcal infections
Nervous: anxiety, depression, stress
Mental-emotional: uplifting and refreshing, anxiety, depression, low-self-esteem

THERAPEUTIC PROPERTIES

Antiseptic (respiratory, genito-urinary), anti-fungal (candida), analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-depressive, antispasmodic, carminative, digestive tonic.

Chemical Family: Esters (lynalyl acetate), monoterpenes (limonene)

Safety/precautions: Phototoxic - Avoid direct sunlight or tanning beds for up to 1 hours after applying Bergamot to the skin. Bergamot must not be applied to the skin undiluted. Serious skin burning or damage can occur if Bergamot is applied and the skin is exposed to the sun . It may be used safely (no phototoxic response) on the skin in a blend at no more than 0.4% (approx. 1-2 drops per 1 oz/30 ml of carrier). If you are using the oil on an area of your skin that has no exposure to the sun or UV light, then there is no safety concern.

If oxidized, Bergamot essential oil may cause skin irritation or sensitization due to the high limonene content.
